On 1 January, 1942, in ajoin operation between the RAF and the BCRA, Jean Moulin was parachuted into France. His codename was ‘Joseph Mercier’.

A fortnight later, on 15 January, Peter Churchill made yet another trip to France, arriving by submarine just off Antibes.

In February the three SOE agents, Dubourdin (‘Alain’), Robert Boiteux (‘Nicolas’) and Victor Gerson (‘Vic’) arranged to meet Jean-Pierre Lévy. This is Lévy’s description of the ensuing series of encounters:1

My relations with them were sometimes very cordial and friendly, but at other times we ended up having furious rows. Knowing that I had numerous contacts all over the area, they wanted us to join their organization, under their control. But in the France-Liberté movement, and later when we merged with Franc-Tireur, we were determined to keep our independence, both on a political level and in terms of outside control, particularly from a foreign government.
